about

“Luddite" by Tracy City is an anti technology anthem: a headbangin blues stomp crossed with riot grrrl snarl and Iggy Pop attitude. Singer Katrina del Mar’s lyrics “I’m a Luddite, I don't log on” tread the line between earnestness and humor; dragging a riff across centuries from the dawn of the Industrial Revolution to today’s distrust and malaise of pervasive, invasive screen culture. Tracy City, invoking the revolutionary 18th century weavers who intentionally destroyed machines that would put them out of work, have created a contemporary character who’s a fugitive from the screen in her return to a life of embodied, pleasurable, physical primacy: IRL.”

“The lyrics are sort of aspirational fiction crossed w dystopian present tense,” says singer, Katrina del Mar, “I’m not a hero, so I wrote one.”

lyrics

Luddite

I’m a Luddite I don’t log on
I live right here in no state nor town
cause I’m
a woman on the run
I’m the one you can’t possess
I live to tell with no regrets
uh huh
like a miracle
I’ve got a body that’s still intact
I’ve got a face to face the facts
of life
a life that’s real
oh uh
life is so surreal

don’t knock upon that door (I’m gone*)
don't bring me down, don't make a mess
I don’t need nothin' more (I’m good*)
got somethin' to profess:

I’m a Luddite I can't deny
I’ll use a pencil until I die uh huh
I dream in black and white
The chair and table are made of wood
don’t have to tell you man, it’s understood uh huh
you wanna have a meal?
I’m a luddite you know I’m real
you can feel it if you come near oh yeah
I’m made of flesh and blood.
oh yeah.
flesh and blood.
don’t call me immature (I’m grown)
don't bring me down, don't make a mess
I’m looking for a cure (I’ve flown)
since I’ve been dispossessed

I’ll break your thresher I’ll break the screen
there’s a rebellion in your scene
uh huh
against the machine.
I’m a luddite, you know I pray
all my plans involve today. oh yeah
I don’t fail truth
I’m no prisoner, I’ll break this wall
stay down the creek til deep fall uh huh
the river runs long
uh huh
walking in the sun

don’t knock upon that door (I’m gone)
it’s not that I’m against progress
I’m tired of living poor (so poor)
with all the skills that I possess
